Liberal Democrats in Broadland have made further calls for the Rackheath 'Eco-town' to be scrapped after it emerged that the funding allocated to the project from central government is far lower than the bid which Broadland District Council submitted last year.

Broadland Liberal Democrats have selected local party member Dan Roper to be their candidate at the General Election later this year. Mr Roper succeeds April Pond who switched from being the Broadland candidate to fight the Norwich North by election last July.

As reported in the EDP: "Liberal Democrat and Conservative party bosses were yesterday analysing an astonishing swing of votes in a Norfolk council by-election which could change the perception of the county's newest Westminster seat. The Lib Dems moved from third place and less than 21pc of the vote in the Broadland District Council Buxton ward in 2007 to a win and more than 71pc of the vote following a by-election on Thursday.

Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Spokesman for Broadland, April Pond, said: "The future of St. Michael's hospital in Aylsham lies in the hands of the Councilors who make up the Health Overview & Scrutiny Committee. The EDP reported that the decision to close the hospital was recommended for approval by council officers, but of course they do not make the decision, the elected members do, and this was also the case over a year ago when the decision to close was first put to and deferred by the HOSC committee."

APRIL Pond, Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Spokesman for Broadland, has invited Mayor of London Boris Johnson to spend a day with her visiting the Norfolk Broads. Her invitation follows dismissive comments made by Mr Johnson today about the value of the Broads as a tourist destination.

LIBERAL Democrats in Broadland are calling on the Government to protect pensioners in Norfolk from energy price rises. They have made the call after figures showed that recent increases in the cost of electricity and gas are set to wipe out pensioners' winter fuel payment.

April Pond, has welcomed the election of Nick Clegg as the New Leader of the Liberal Democrats. April commented: "Nick has a clear view of where the party should be going, and this result is a great boost for the Liberal Democrats. The Lib Dems are the only alternative to the increasingly disaster prone Labour Government. Unlike the ever shifting Cameron Conservatives we are completely committed to saving the NHS. We have taken the lead in opposing Labour's hugely expensive and wasteful ID cards. It is quite clear from recent revelations that our data is not safe with this government. In fact, no one would now trust Gordon Brown with their weekly shopping list.
