What's happening on September 28th?

Local government by-elections are taking place this month. The Liberal Democrats are proud of our candidates. Read more about them here.

On September 28th 2021, by-elections will be taking place in Old Catton & Sprowston West District Council, Old Catton Parish Council and Sprowston West Town Council.

& Old Catton Parish Council

John was born and grew up in Moore Avenue. After finishing his secondary education at Sprowston High School, he did an apprenticeship as an electrician before joining Lotus Cars in 1987. In 1991 he moved to Thorpe St Andrew.

After being made redundant from Lotus in 1992, John then joined the Ford Motor Company in Essex and left Norwich for the next 25 years! From Ford he moved to Jaguar Cars in Coventry and then joined the Civil Service where he spent a happy 12 years approving crash tests and emission tests on behalf of the Vehicle Certification Agency, and during this period spent 4 years in Japan and many months in South Korea as well as travelling to manufacturers all over Europe.

John and his wife decided to move home to Norwich to be nearer his parents and as a result they moved back to Sprowston and he rejoined Lotus Cars. Shortly after arriving home in 2018 they discovered that his wife was pregnant and their son James arrived in 2019!

Now that they are home and settled, John would like to give something back to the community that moulded him and try to bring some of his strong personal values of honesty, fairness and equality to local politics, as well as participating in the sustainable development of the area - the pressures are high to meet the demand for housing but this must not be at the cost of our community.

This is John's first foray into local government and he hopes to bring a fresh input into the process along with his experiences of travelling and working in varied environments.

The upcoming by-elections across Old Catton and Sprowston West look set to be hotly contested between the Conservatives and popular local Liberal Democrats John Chettleburgh and Bob Fowkes.

Bob first moved to Sprowston 17 years ago and knows the town very well. He was an active member of Sprowston Town Council between 2013 and 2019.

Bob says it's very clear that the Conservatives value hitting targets more than standing up for and representing their community properly. He vows to work with others in the local community to oppose unwanted development and ensure that every voice is heard.

This is our opportunity to grab change with both hands. Together, we can send a message that we expect more from our local politicians and demand a better kind of politics - one that puts people first.

Brundall, Strumpshaw & Cantley

Imagine waking up on 29 September knowing that Brundall, Strumpshaw and Cantley were no longer being taken for granted. Knowing that our villages were finally receiving the care and attention to detail they desperately deserve.

That hope and vision can become a reality when local voters head to the polls in the upcoming District Council by-elections here in Brundall Ward on Tuesday 28 September. For too long, our special corner of Norfolk has not had District Councillors with strong voices to speak up for our local community.

Eleanor Mason and Victor Scrivens are different. They're in this fight because they believe that you and your community deserve so much better. Retired teacher Eleanor has lived in Brundall village for 19 years. She knows this area like the back of her hand and understands the issues and challenges we all face. Eleanor is the Chair of Trustees for Get Me Out The Four Walls, a charity which supports local families with young children.

Veteran campaigner Victor has the life experience and know-how to get things done for our community. Together, they are exactly what our area needs: local, passionate voices that will put residents first and deliver improvements for our special corner of Norfolk.
